You have to keep in mind that the results are interpreted by human beings. Humans are pattern seeking animals and find connections between purely coincidental events. A good example of this phenomenon is people believing they have ESP because they are thinking of someone, the phone rings and that person is on the line. What we forget is all the times we thought of that person and they didn't call. We remember the "hits" and forget the "misses".

In order for this modern oracle or prophet to be true, it would have to accurately predict all events, not a select few. The problem with vague predictions is some of them are bound to be true. A few "hits" do not excuse all the "misses" though.

Jesus' disciples and his followers all believed (and still believe) the end of the world would come in their lifetime. The end has been predicted many times, the most recent being the year 2000. I don't doubt that the world will end but it's much more likely to be caused by natural events. The true "prophets" then would be astronomers (not astrologists) plotting the course of asteroids and meteors on a crash course with the Earth or scientists predicting with mathematics the results of our own impact on the environment and the depletion of non-renewable resources.

Even then, the world will not truly end. We will. The Earth will continue to spin and orbit the sun. The sun will continue along its journey a with a million other suns and galaxies. The only difference is we won't be here to witness it. In the greater scheme of things, not much will have changed.
